This missile can reach speeds of Mach 10, making it undetectable by enemy air defense systems.

On Friday, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that the Russian military has received its first Oreshnik hypersonic ballistic missile, the country’s latest-generation strategic weapon.

“We have produced the first serial batch of the Oreshnik missile, the first serial missile. It is already in service with the troops,” he said from the Valaam Orthodox Monastery during a meeting with Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko.

“This year we plan to complete the works,” Lukashenko said, confirming his country’s willingness to host the hypersonic ballistic missiles starting in 2026.

This new missile can reach speeds of Mach 10, or 2.5 kilometers per second, making it undetectable by enemy air defense systems. The Oreshnik is part of a suite of “unparalleled” weapons, presented to the public in what many analysts described as a Star Wars-style arms race between Russia and NATO.

The missile can carry up to six independently guided nuclear warheads. With its medium-range capabilities, it could theoretically strike targets thousands of kilometers away with a margin of error of only a few dozen meters.

In November 2024, Russia launched a test version of the Oreshnik—without explosive payloads—at a military factory in Ukraine’s Dnipropetrovsk region.

Also on Friday, Putin addressed ongoing peace talks with Ukraine, but he made no mention of the 10-day ultimatum issued by U.S. President Donald Trump demanding an end to the war.

“We need a lasting and solid peace with a good foundation that satisfies both Russia and Ukraine and ensures the security of both countries,” Putin said.
